About our client
Our client is a property management business based in Birmingham. They're part of a wider property development group and primarily manage their own residential portfolio. They're growing their in-house finance function, and this is a newly created role within it.
The role
As Service Charge Accountant, you'll take ownership of the day-to-day service charge accounting for the portfolio. You'll work closely with property managers on budgets, produce management reporting, and act as the main point of contact for leaseholders on financial queries. Year-end is managed by an external accounting firm, so your focus is on preparing and providing the financial information and supporting documentation they need to complete it.
What you'll be doing
- Assisting Property Managers in setting, reviewing and managing annual service charge budgets
- Preparing financial information and supporting documentation for external accountants ahead of year-end certification
- Carrying out bank, supplier and balance sheet reconciliations
- Monitoring service charge arrears, issuing demands and managing debt recovery
- Producing monthly and quarterly management reports against budget
- Presenting financial updates to leaseholders on block-by-block calls every six months
Skills and experience
Essential
- 3 to 4 years' experience in property service charge accounting
- Solid understanding of service charge frameworks, RICS guidelines and landlord and tenant legislation
- Strong Excel skills
- Experience with property management software such as Qube or similar
Desirable
- Experience presenting financial information directly to clients or leaseholders
- Background in credit control or arrears management within property
Why join them
You'd be joining a small, close-knit finance team within a business that's growing steadily and managing its own assets rather than juggling multiple external clients. It's a fully office-based role with standard weekday hours and comes with a company pension and a supportive, hands-on team culture where there's genuine scope to shape the role as the team expands.
